August 20 ------ Jericho Rosales played the ultimate politician in the trailer of “Quezon,” a biopic about the Philippines’ second president, Manuel Luis Quezon. The trailer, which was released on TBA Studios’ YouTube channel, showed multiple characters, including that of Quezon’s own wife, Aurora (Karylle), who described him as a “[political] chameleon,” as he could seamlessly interact with everyone.
But while the two-minute trailer showed the Spanish mestizo Quezon denying the “chameleon” tag, his actions show otherwise — openly showcasing how he dealt with political rivals and allies in a genteel manner, but becoming disdainful of them later on.
However, his mercurial personality comes to the fore as he goes head-to-head with then-President Emilio Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado) , who challenges his capability to rule the country as the next president.
Quezon puts together an elaborate campaign to help him win voters, even hiring filmmakers to create movies documenting his “greatest achievements” the moment he decided to be a lawyer. “When his fight for Philippine independence from the United States is put to the test, Manuel L. Quezon finds himself playing the brutal game of politics to outmaneuver his rivals — including Leonard Wood, Sergio Osmeña, and Joven Hernando,” the film’s synopsis reads. “In his relentless quest for power, he eventually faces off with Emilio Aguinaldo in the 1935 Philippine presidential elections, using charm and favoritism as both weapons and currency, in a campaign that ultimately changes the face of Philippine politics and history,” it continued.
Aside from Confiado and Karylle, joining Rosales in the film are Bodjie Pascua, Romnick Sarmenta, Ketchup Eusebio, Joross Gamboa, JC Santos, Jake Macapagal, Angeli Bayani, and “Game of Thrones” star Iain Glen. Benjamin Alves stars as the younger Quezon. “Quezon” is the third of the production studio’s “Bayaniverse” film franchise, following “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral,” and will premiere on October 15.
