Queen guitarist Brian May suffers heart attack, undergoes surgery

May 26 ------ Queen guitarist Brian May revealed Monday that he was rushed to the hospital after suffering a “small” heart attack.

In a video posted in his Instagram account, May said that besides injuring his buttocks in a gardening incident earlier this May, he was also diagnosed with a serious heart issue. The 72-year-old May, who is also an astrophysicist, said that a week after he was sent home after ripping his gluteus maximus due to his gardening incident, he was still in tremendous pain which prompted him to visit the hospital and have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) taken of his spine.

The MRI result showed that there was a compressed sciatic nerve which caused the “agonizing” pain that he described as “the feeling that someone was putting a screwdriver in my back.” While still enduring the buttocks and spine pain, May said that he also suffered a heart attack. “In the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside I had a small heart attack,” he said, saying that he endured 40 minutes of pain and chest tightness.

May revealed that upon arriving at the hospital, he found out that he had three blocked arteries which were quickly treated by medics. He said that despite suggestions to have a triple heart bypass, he opted to have three stents put in him. Stents are short, wire mesh tubes that works like a scaffolding to help keep an artery open. May said that he was shocked when he found out about his heart ailment, having thought he was a “healthy guy.”

The musician said that after the “incredible operation,” he was discharged from the hospital feeling remarkably better. “When I came around, it was as if nothing happened — I couldn’t feel that they’ve been in here, I couldn’t feel anything,” he said. May expressed his gratitude to his doctors and physiotherapist.
