Phivolcs logs 400 offshore quakes off Sultan Kudarat in 3 days

January 22 ------ The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it recorded about 400 weak to moderately strong offshore earthquakes off Sultan Kudarat over a three-day period, from late Jan. 19 to early Jan. 21.

In an advisory, Phivolcs said the earthquakes were monitored from 10:52 p.m. on Jan. 19 until 1 p.m. on Jan. 21 in the vicinity of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. Of the total, 135 earthquakes were plotted, with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 5.2. Around 20 of the tremors were felt and assigned corresponding intensity values.

Phivolcs said the earthquakes occurred offshore and formed a sequence that was closely monitored by its seismic network. The agency urged the public to remain prepared for earthquakes and to practice the standard safety protocol of duck, cover, and hold during ground shaking. For residents in coastal areas, Phivolcs advised heightened vigilance for possible signs of a local tsunami, including strong shaking, sudden changes in sea level, and unusual roaring sounds similar to an approaching wave. It said anyone who observes any of these warning signs should immediately evacuate to higher ground or move away from the shoreline.

Phivolcs said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
