MANILA, Philippines, May 31 ------ The Department of Foreign Affairs has placed New Caledonia under Crisis Alert Level 2 (Restriction Phase) due to the announcement of a state of emergency in the territory. “Filipinos living in New Caledonia are advised to remain vigilant, avoid public places, and restrict non-essential movement. Filipinos are also advised to monitor and follow guidelines set by local authorities,” the department said.
There are approximately 200 Filipinos and Filipinos by descent living in the French territory. Filipinos can contact the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney for concerns via email: sydney.pcg@dfa.gov.ph and thru SMS and calls for assistance-to-nationals at +61 481 728 027. France on Tuesday lifted a state of emergency in its Pacific territory of New Caledonia but is maintaining a curfew and sending hundreds of paramilitary reinforcements after two weeks of unrest in which seven people died and hundreds were injured.
