Philippine COVID-19 cases top 396,000; 11,430 new recoveries logged

November 9 ------ The Philippines’ coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tally rose to 396,395 on Sunday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 2,442 new infections as 13 laboratories failed to submit reports on time. The areas with the highest number of new infections were Rizal with 138, Manila City with 131, Benguet with 130, Batangas with 113, and Bulacan with 112.

Ninety percent of the newly reported cases contracted COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Meanwhile, the total number of recoveries rose to 361,638 after 11,430 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease. The DOH earlier said it would report time-based recoveries every Sunday under its “Oplan Recovery” initiative, where asymptomatic and mild cases are re-tagged as recovered after completing 14 days of quarantine without developing symptoms.

The death toll also climbed to 7,539, with 54 new fatalities, 39 of whom died this month. “Moreover, five cases previously tagged as recovered were reclassified as deaths,” the DOH added. The remaining 27,218 are active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 82 percent of which are mild, 9.6 percent are asymptomatic, 3.1 percent are severe, and 5.4 percent are in critical condition.

Globally, COVID-19 has claimed over 1.24 million lives and infected more than 49.55 million people. The Philippines ranks 25th in the number of confirmed cases.
