MANILA, December 20 ------ The growing security ties between the Philippines and Japan were highlighted in a high-level virtual meeting between ranking military leaders of the two nations last Dec. 17.

In a statement, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. and Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) chief of staff, joint staff, Gen. Hiroaki Uchikura, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defense cooperation during their dialogue. "During the discussion, both military leaders exchanged views on regional security developments and explored opportunities to further enhance cooperation between the AFP and JSDF," it added.

In the same meeting, Brawner expressed the AFP’s appreciation for Japan’s continued support and underscored the importance of sustained engagement with like-minded partners in promoting regional peace and stability. "The virtual meeting underscored the strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, reflecting a shared commitment to maintaining regional stability and advancing defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region founded on mutual respect, shared values, and adherence to international law," the AFP said.

The Philippines and Japan's Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) entered into force on Sept. 11, 2025 and allows greater military cooperation between the two nations.
