PH fixed broadband internet speed moves up 8 spots in global ranking

March 21 ------ Fixed broadband average download speed improved in the Philippines in February with average download speed moving eight notches up in global ranking. Citing a report from internet access performance metrics provider Ookla Speedtest, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the country’s fixed broadband speed now places 92nd from 100th last January among countries tested.

The country’s average download speed for February surged to 38.6 megabits per second (Mbps), a 17.51 percent increase from January’s 32.73 Mbps and a 386.22 percent increase from the recorded figure of 7.91 Mbps in July 2016. Mobile internet speed overall performance also improved the Philippines’ global ranking by three notches, now at 83rd from its previous place at 86th. “As for the mobile internet speed, the January figures recorded 25.77 Mbps, showing a slight increase in average download speed,” DICT said on Wednesday, March 17.

According to Ookla’s report, the country recorded an average mobile download speed of 26.24 Mbps, showing an increase of 252.68 percent from its speed of 7.44 Mbps in July 2016. The DICT assured that it is working with other agencies to expedite permitting requirements to support telcos with their intensified deployment of cellular towers. It also noted a significant increase in the number of cellular towers built from July 2020 to January 2021, with 3,211 new towers. “With our combined efforts, the Philippine broadband and mobile network experience had steadily undergone great improvements, and we look forward to what we can further achieve in the coming months,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said.

In Asia, the country ranks 24th for fixed broadband and 25th for mobile out of 50 countries. Among the 46 Asia-Pacific countries, the Philippines places 18th for fixed broadband and 14th for mobile.
