PH Embassy warns Filipinos in Italy of possible protests, public disturbances

MANILA, October 24 ------ The Philippine Embassy in Rome has urged Filipinos in Italy to exercise heightened caution as demonstrations and public disturbances are expected in several Italian cities.
In an advisory, the embassy identified Rome, Milan, Florence, Turin, Bologna, Padua, Bari, and Genoa as areas where further demonstrations are expected, with multiple marches and demonstrations also anticipated in parts of Rome. The embassy said recent protests in some Italian cities have resulted in clashes with police, property damage, looting and other disturbances, although many demonstrations may remain peaceful.
Filipinos were advised to avoid protest sites, large gatherings and areas where confrontations or other disturbances are taking place. They were also urged not to participate in or approach protest activities. The embassy discouraged unnecessary travel to areas where demonstrations are scheduled or ongoing on Saturday. Those who need to travel were advised to plan routes away from protest sites and allow extra time for possible traffic diversions and disruptions to public transportation.
Filipinos were also urged to monitor local news and official announcements, follow instructions from Italian authorities, and remain vigilant, particularly in city centers and areas where large gatherings are expected. The embassy further advised Filipinos to keep their mobile phones charged, maintain communication with family and trusted contacts, and keep identification documents, emergency contact details and essential medicines readily accessible. They were also encouraged to maintain adequate supplies of food, drinking water, medicines and other necessities at home in case movement or access to basic services is temporarily disrupted.
In case of an emergency, Filipinos in Italy may call the Italian emergency services at 112. They may also contact the Philippine Embassy in Rome through its emergency hotline at +39 334 658 2118, or the Philippine Consulate General in Milan through its Assistance-to-Nationals hotline at +39 389 683 5076.
The embassy said it would continue monitoring developments and issue further advisories as necessary. It urged Filipinos to remain calm, exercise prudence and prioritize their safety and that of their families. The Department of Migrant Workers said on Oct. 21 that it was coordinating with Philippine diplomatic posts in Rome and Milan to monitor Filipinos’ welfare and provide assistance to those in need.
