July 3 ------ The Carl Papa-helmed “58th” won the Facing the Edge award under the Festival Category of this year’s Doc Edge Festival, an Oscar-qualifying festival based in New Zealand.

The GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures-produced animated documentary film about the 2009 gruesome Maguindanao massacre held its Asia-Pacific premiere at the international film event. GMA Senior Vice President Nessa Valdellon accepted the award during ceremonies on Wednesday, July 1 at the Grand Millennium Auckland.

The Facing the Edge accolade is given to films that take audiences “to the boundary of justice, technology, love, and what it means to be human in a shifting world.” Leading this year’s Doc Edge Festival winners are “featherStrength” and “Inside Gaza” which respectively won the Best New Zealand Feature and Best International Feature accolades—the categories eligible for Oscar's consideration. “58th” premiered last January at the 2026 Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) in the Netherlands. The film also had a screening at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

The movie’s cast members include Glaiza de Castro, Ricky Davao, Mikoy Morales, Biboy Ramirez, Marco Masa and Zyren Dela Cruz.
