BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei, May 29 ------ The Philippines and Brunei have signed a letter of intent signifying the two countries’ willingness to cooperate for the mutual improvement of their agriculture and food industries.
The deal was signed during the state visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Brunei. “It underscores the interest of both the Philippines and Brunei to explore further cooperation and collaboration on the field of agriculture for food security and sustainable agriculture between the two countries,” a statement from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) read.
The PCO has yet to provide further details about the agriculture and food security commitments of the two countries. But the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA) earlier said that it was in talks with its Bruneian counterpart over Manila’s possible export of Jasmine and sticky rice variants to the Sultanate. Manila and Bandar Seri Begawan have also been exploring cooperation in the Halal industry, the DA earlier said.
The two Southeast Asian countries also inked deals on tourism and maritime cooperation. The agreements signed between the Philippines and Brunei “are certainly rich with potential” and would “be a very good start to once again re-energize” the relationship of the two countries, Marcos Jr. told Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during their bilateral meeting. The Philippines hopes “to expand the partnerships that we have begun, and we feel that there is much potential that we can examine,” the Filipino leader said. The Philippines and Brunei marked 40 years of bilateral relations this year.
