Panama Canal reduces draft for vessels transiting its Neopanamax Locks

August 7 ------ The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will reduce the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting its Neopanamax Locks later this month as it continues water management measures to safeguard operations amid persistent hydrological challenges.

Despite the onset of the rainy season in Panama, the ACP said current watershed conditions and the lingering effects of the El Niño phenomenon require additional measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of canal operations while maintaining reliable service for customers.

Effective August 26, 2026, the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax Locks will be reduced to 14.63 meters (48.0 feet) Tropical Fresh Water (TFW). A further reduction to 14.48 meters (47.5 feet) TFW will take effect on September 3, 2026, and remain in place until further notice.

To remind, previously, the Panama Canal had announced that, starting July 1, the maximum allowed draft for vessels using the Neopanamax locks would be reduced to 49.5 feet (15.09 meters).

The authority said the adjustments are intended to support safe navigation and operational reliability based on current Gatun Lake levels and projected hydrological conditions. It added that weather conditions, watershed inflows and lake levels will continue to be closely monitored, with further operational updates issued if necessary.

The ACP emphasized that the capacity of both the Neopanamax and Panamax Locks remains unchanged, with no reduction in available transit slots planned at this time. Customers are encouraged to use the Canal’s Transit Reservation (Booking) System to support efficient voyage planning and minimize potential delays.

The authority also noted that changing weather conditions may require operational adjustments on shorter notice than previously anticipated, although it will seek to provide advance notice whenever possible.
