Panama Canal postpones reducing draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks

September 8 ------ The Panama Canal Authority announced that it would postpone a planned reduction in the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax Locks, allowing ships to continue operating under the existing 14.63-meter (48.0-foot) Tropical Fresh Water (TFW) limit.

The Canal had previously announced that the maximum draft would be reduced to 14.48 meters (47.5 feet) TFW from October 1, 2026. The adjustment has now been postponed following the Canal’s latest assessment of Gatun Lake water levels and weather projections.

Maintaining the current draft limit provides greater continuity for vessel operators and customers in voyage planning and fleet deployment. The decision also reflects the Canal’s approach of adapting operating parameters to changing water conditions while maintaining safe and efficient transit operations.

The Panama Canal said it will continue monitoring water levels and weather conditions and will provide advance notice of any future changes that could affect vessel draft requirements. The ongoing assessment is intended to support more predictable planning for customers while ensuring the waterway’s operational reliability.
