MANILA, Philippines, October 6 ------ The state-run weather agency said on Monday that it is closely monitoring two weather disturbances outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), including Severe Tropical Storm Halong.

Halong, which was estimated at 2,105 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, remains unlikely to directly affect the country, said weather specialist Daniel James Villamil of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). “In fact, it has a slim chance to enter PAR, but in case it enters, it would have a domestic name Quedan,” Villamil added.

Meanwhile, Villamil said Pagasa also spotted several cloud clusters outside PAR, which may become a low-pressure area. “Just the same, it would not have a direct effect on the weather in the archipelago,” he said.

In the meantime, Pagasa said a weather system called the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) – an imaginary line where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet – has been affecting the Zamboanga Peninsula and BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), where cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms would prevail. Metro Manila and the rest of the country would be experiencing partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the localized thunderstorms, it added.
