MANILA, Philippines, August 4 ------ There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Kuril Islands, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said that the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit east of Kuril Islands at 1:38 p.m. It had a depth of 41 kilometers. Kuril Islands extends for 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) from the southern portion of Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia to the northeastern part of Hokkaido Island in Japan. It is part of the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and tsunamis are common. “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines based on this earthquake,” Phivolcs said.
With this, Phivolcs recommended “no action required” from this event. Last July 30, state seismologists issued a tsunami warning in several areas facing the Pacific Ocean after a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake jolted the east coast of Kamchatka in Russia. It was lifted on the same day after no sea level disturbances and tsunami waves were recorded.
