MANILA, Philippines, July 21 ------ The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday said there is no tsunami threat to the country, following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

In its latest advisory, Phivolcs said the offshore quake occurred at 2:49 p.m. (Philippine time) and was located at 52.5°N, 160.7°E with a depth of 77 kilometers. “Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kms. of the earthquake epicenter,” the agency noted, but emphasized that the tremor does not pose a destructive tsunami threat to the Philippines.
