MANILA, Philippines, August 26 ------ Malacañang suspended work in government and classes in all levels in Metro Manila and 14 other areas today due to expected heavy rainfall from a low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon. Apart from Metro Manila, covered by the work and class suspension are the provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Batangas, Cavite, Aurora, Quezon, Rizal, Laguna, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte and Southern Leyte.

However, agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue their operations and render the necessary services, according to Memorandum Circular 94 issued by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin. The localized cancellation or suspension of classes and/or work in government offices in other areas may still be implemented by their respective local governments, pursuant to relevant laws, rules and regulations, the memo said.

The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads, it said. The order was issued upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
