MANILA, Philippines, June 3 ------ A new low-pressure area (LPA) has been spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), roughly 495 kilometers northwest of Pagasa Island, Kalayaan in Palawan, the national weather bureau said on Wednesday.
Weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5 a.m. briefing that the LPA could enter PAR either Thursday or Friday. He said Pagasa will closely monitor the LPA's movement to determine its direction in the coming days.
Meanwhile, he said the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ would be dumping heavy rains over at least 12 Luzon areas, including Metro Manila, within the next 24 hours. Other affected areas include Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan, where moderate to heavy rain could occur, causing flash floods or inducing landslides.
“Based on the weather agency’s forecast, habagat would be dumping between 50 to 100 millimeters of water within the day,” according to the Pagasa forecaster. The rest of the country, he said, would experience partly cloudy or overcast skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
