December 27 ------ Eight persons have been reported dead while three others have been said to be injured due to the heavy rains and widespread floods caused by the shear line in four regions since the Christmas weekend.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's Situation Report No. 2, a total of 19 persons were also reported missing in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao. A total of 27,133 families or 100,691 individuals have been affected by the rains in MIMAROPA and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Some 44,707 persons have been displaced by the rains and floods, with most staying in evacuation centers.
Power in 36 cities and municipalities was affected by the storms, but 31 of the areas have reported that electricity has been restored. The NDRRMC also said that no outage of telecommunications services has been reported. The NDRRMC reported that the estimated cost of damage to agriculture is P61,879,614. The cost of damage to livestock, poultry, and fisheries stood at P5,750,000.
According to a report, Misamis Occidental has declared a state of calamity due to the impact of the rains and floods on the province. Several areas in Visayas and Mindanao were flooded on Christmas Day due to the effects of the shear line—the weather system formed by the meeting between a cold front and a warmer front—or the Northeast Monsoon, also called the Amihan, with many people spending the night in evacuation centers or stranded in ports.
PAGASA's most recent 24-hour public weather forecast said that parts of the country would be affected by the two weather systems. The shear line was forecast to bring rainshowers and thunderstorms to Eastern Visayas, northern Mindanao, Caraga, Palawan, and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao. The Amihan, meanwhile, was forecast to bring cloudy skies with rain to the Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, Quezon, and Bicol Region. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon would also see some cloudy skies and light rain due to the Amihan.
