BACOLOD CITY, Philippines, April 4 ------ Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island continued to show increased activity after four more ash eruptions lasting 17 to 85 minutes occurred yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said the ash eruptions generated grayish plumes that rose 400 meters above the crater and were accompanied by 16 volcanic quakes, including five tremors. In the past two days, Phivolcs said the volcano spewed ash 11 times. Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said that as long as Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon, evacuees would remain in evacuation centers.

On April 9, the 7,900 families composed of 24,891 people displaced by Kanlaon will mark their fourth month of staying in evacuation centers or in the houses of their relatives. The provincial government assured displaced residents of continued assistance. Lacson said the budget for  the food of the evacuess for another month is readily available. He said the fund would be sourced from the P50-million assistance provided by Malacañang.
