MANILA, May 30 ------ Taal Volcano, the country's most active volcano, released a 1,500-meter high white plume of smoke on Thursday night. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Taal had a "minor phreatic eruption at 9:22 p.m.

The eruption in Batangas province was captured by a thermal camera of the Buco Observation Station (VTBC). The volcano has been emitting sulfur dioxide in the past days. Last Wednesday, it emitted 6,289 metric tons (MT) of sulfur dioxide. Two days before that, it also spewed 5,418 MT of toxic gas.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) alerted residents living near the volcano. "Naganap ang steam-driven o phreatic na pagputok sa Bulkang Taal patungo sa timog-kanluran dakong 9:18PM ng gabi. Sumunod sa abiso ng awtoridad," the NDRRMC said.
