August 16 ------ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. moved the commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21, 2024 to August 23, the Presidential Communications Office announced. Proclamation No. 665, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on August 15, also declared August 23 as a special (non-working) day.
The commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day was originally on August 21, a Wednesday, but was moved to a Friday “in order to provide for a longer weekend, thereby promoting domestic tourism”, the proclamation also said. The commemoration of Ninoy Aquino Day is mandated by Republic Act No. 9492, signed into law in 2007 by then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The law allows for the celebration of the special holiday on the Monday nearest August 21, unless modified by law or proclamation.
