October 17 ------ The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Surigao del Norte around 7:03 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

Phivolcs said the epicenter was located 21 kilometers southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Its instruments measured the quake at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte; Hinunangan, San Francisco, Hinundayan, and Silago in Southern Leyte; and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, triggered by the movement of an active fault in the area.

It added that the tremor may have caused damage and that aftershocks are possible.
