
MANILA, January 23 ------ A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Southern Leyte on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. The tectonic quake struck 10 kilometers southeast of the municipality of San Francisco at 7:39 a.m. It was 10 km. deep.
Phivolcs logged the following instrumental intensities:
Intensity V - Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte
Intensity IV - Hinunangan and Maasin, Southern Leyte
Intensity III - Palo, Dulag, Ormoc City, and Carigara, Leyte
Instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration. Meanwhile, Phivolcs said aftershocks and damage are possible.
