Magnitude 5.8 earthquake rattles Cebu

MANILA, Philippines, October 13 ------ A magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook the city of Bogo in Cebu province early Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. Tectonic in origin and with a depth of five kilometers (kms), the tremor happened at 1:06 a.m. some 11 kms southwest of Cebu City, Phivolcs said. It said it was an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that happened on September 30.


Initial reports indicated that Intensity 5 was felt in Tabuelan, Bogo, Tabogon, San Remigio, Medellin, and Daanbantayan, while Intensity 4 wasss felt in Bantayan, Catmon, Sogod, and Tuburan in Cebu; City of Iloilo; and City of Roxas, and Pontevedra in Capiz. The agency said Intensity 3 was felt in Argao, San Francisco, and San Fernando, Cebu; City of Tagbilaran, Carlos P. Garcia, and Dauis, Bohol; and City of Canlaon and City of Himamaylan, Negros Occidental while Intensity 1 in the City of Legazpi, Albay.


Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensity 5 was recorded in Villaba, Leyte; Intensity 4 in Cebu City, Danao City, Talisay City, Argao and Asturias, Cebu; Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; City of Ormoc; and Abuyog, Hilongos, Isabel and Leyte, Leyte and Intensity 3 in San Francisco, and San Fernando, Cebu; Alangalang, Dulag, Leyte; Hinundayan, Silago, Sogos, Southern Leyte; City of Bago, City of Canlaon, and City of La Carlota, Negros Occidental; Talibon, Bohol; Milagros, Masbate; Tapaz, Capiz; and Rosario, Northern Samar.


Phivolcs director Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol said damage to infrastructure and aftershocks were expected from the latest Bogo quake.
