Magnitude 5.5 quake rocks Negros Occidental, nearby areas - Phivolcs

November 3 ------ A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted Candoni, Negros Occidental, early Monday, Nov. 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.


In its Earthquake Information No. 2, the agency said the quake struck at 3:06 a.m., with the epicenter located 16 kilometers south of Candoni, Negros Occidental. It added that the quake had a depth of focus of 89 kilometers and was of tectonic origin, indicating movement of the earth’s crust.


Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Candoni, Negros Occidental; and in the cities of Dumaguete and Sibulan, both in Negros Oriental.

Instrumental Intensities:

• Intensity III in Jordan, Guimaras; the cities of Bago, La Carlota, and Sipalay in Negros Occidental.

• Intensity II in Malinao, Aklan; Culasi, San Jose, Sebaste, and Valderrama, Antique; Nueva Valencia, Guimaras; Argao and Cebu City in Cebu; Dipolog, Liloy, Sindangan, and Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte; and Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur.

• Intensity I in Anini-y, Antique; Jamindan, Roxas City, and Tapaz, Capiz; San Lorenzo, Guimaras; Bacolod City; Talibon, Bohol; and Asturias and Talisay, Cebu.


Meanwhile, Phivolcs said it does not expect damage from the earthquake, but aftershocks are possible.
