Magnitude 5.5 quake hits waters off La Union; aftershocks expected

MANILA, Philippines, September 19 ------ Aftershocks are expected as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit waters off La Union early morning on Friday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). In its latest update, Phivolcs said the earthquake, which was of tectonic origin, occurred at 3:52 a.m. Its epicenter was recorded 49 kilometers northwest of Luna, La Union, with a depth of 17 kilometers.
Phivolcs reported intensities in the following areas:
- Intensity V – Luna, LA UNION
- Intensity IV – Villasis, PANGASINAN
- Intensity III – CITY OF BAGUIO
Instrumental intensities are likewise recorded in the following areas:
- Intensity III – Bolinao and Bani, PANGASINAN; Sinait and City of Vigan, ILOCOS SUR; Bontoc, MOUNTAIN PROVINCE;
- Intensity II – City Laoag, ILOCOS NORTE; Candon and Narvacan, ILOCOS SUR; Bangar, LA UNION; CITY OF DAGUPAN; Urdaneta and Lingayen, PANGASINAN;
- Intensity I – Dinalupihan and Orani, BATAAN; CITY OF BAGUIO; Obando and Calumpit, BULACAN; Claveria, CAGAYAN; San Nicolas, ILOCOS NORTE; Tagudin, ILOCOS SUR; CITY OF MALABON; Guagua, PAMPANGA; Umingan and Sison, PANGASINAN; Ramos and Bamban, TARLAC; Subic, Iba, Masinloc, San Marcelino, and Cabangan, ZAMBALES
No damage to properties is expected from the earthquake.
