Magnitude 5.2 quake rocks Surigao del Sur

MANILA, January 25 ------ A magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolted Surigao del Sur on Sunday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. The tremor happened at 10:26 p.m., 65 kilometers northeast of Bayabas town, Surigao del Sur.

It was tectonic in origin and struck at a depth of 12 kilometers, according to state seismologists. Phivolcs initially reported the epicenter near General Luna town in Surigao del Norte.

It was also initially recorded at magnitude 5.1. Intensity II was felt at Bislig City. The quake was not expected to cause damage but aftershocks are expected, Phivolcs said.
