January 22 ------ Filipino moviegoers will get a rare chance to return to Middle-earth as “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” extended edition screens in cinemas nationwide for a limited engagement from January 23 to 25, as part of the celebrations for its 25th year.

The extended cut of the 2001 fantasy epic features around 30 minutes of additional footage not included in the original theatrical release, bringing the film’s total runtime to approximately three hours and 28 minutes. The screening marks a special 25th anniversary presentation of the first installment of Peter Jackson’s landmark “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1954 novel, “The Fellowship of the Ring” follows the journey of Frodo Baggins, a young hobbit tasked with destroying a powerful ring that threatens to plunge Middle-earth into darkness. The film stars Elijah Wood as Frodo, alongside Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Liv Tyler as Arwen, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, and Sean Bean as Boromir, among others. The Fellowship of the Ring grossed nearly $900 million worldwide at the box office. It also earned 13 Academy Award nominations and won four, including Best Cinematography and Best Original Score.

The trilogy concluded with “The Return of the King” in 2003, which won 11 Academy Awards, tying the record for most Oscar wins by a single film. The franchise later expanded with “The Hobbit” trilogy (2012–2014), also directed by Jackson. Recent additions include the animated feature “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” released internationally in 2024, and a newly announced live-action film, “The Hunt for Gollum,” which is currently in development with Jackson attached as producer.
