Less than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases posted anew

December 29 ------ For the second day in a row, the Philippines has recorded less than 1,000 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), pushing the national case count to 470,650 Monday, the Department of Health said. A total of 766 new cases of the disease were reported while 104 recoveries were reported, taking the total recovery count to 438, 780.

There were 15 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 9,124. According to the latest data from the Health department, Davao reported the highest new cases for the day with 60 followed by Quezon City with 46, Benguet with 41, Laguna with 39, and Rizal with 37. Active cases are at 22,746. Of this, 80 percent are mild cases, 6 percent are in critical condition, 3.2 percent are severe cases, and 0.44 percent are moderate cases.

The country also recorded less than a thousand new confirmed cases (883 cases) on Sunday, December 27. The department also reported that at present, 62 percent of the intensive care units (ICU) dedicated for COVID-19 are available while 68 percent of the isolation beds set for cases of the disease are unoccupied. It added that 78 percent of the ward beds for COVID-19 patients are available and 80 percent of ventilators are unused.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III warned the public of the “anticipated COVID-19 case surge” this holiday season, taking note of the peak of cases in August. “We do not want that to happen again. Ang laban na ito ay hindi kakayanin ng gobyerno at ang sektor ng kalusugan lamang. Kailangan po namin ng kooperasyon ng mamamayan” Duque said, emphasizing that a whole-of-nation approach will be key to mitigating the increase in cases.
