MANILA, Philippines, August 18 ------ The tally of patients infected with leptospirosis and dengue in Manila fell slightly in the past week, according to the Manila Public Information Office.

The MPIO records show that 137 leptospirosis cases were recorded as of Aug. 15, which was four cases lower compared to the 141 recorded in the city’s six district hospitals on Aug. 8. Dengue cases also showed a decline, with 132 patients logged in as of Aug. 15, or 20 cases lower than the 152 patients on Aug. 8. Of the number, 103 were “confirmed” cases and 28 are “presently admitted.” The remaining one succumbed to the disease at the Sta. Ana Hospital.

According to the MPIO, of the 137 leptospirosis cases, 52 were considered confirmed, one in Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital and 51 in the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center. Of the cases, 56 patients are “presently admitted.” At least 29 have died. The city government reminds residents who wade through flooded roads to visit their health centers and get prescribed doses of the antibiotic Doxycycline. It also advised communities to keep their surroundings clean to prevent flooding and stagnant water.
