Metro Manila, June 21 ----- Lava slowly flowing from Mayon Volcano's crater summit advanced to “maximum lengths” of 2.5 kilometers along the southern Mi-si gully and 1.8 kilometers on the southeastern Bonga channel, state volcanologists said on Tuesday.
In its latest 24-hour bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported 301 rockfall events and one volcanic earthquake. Phivolcs also observed two dome-collapse pyroclastic density currents, or streams of hot rock fragments, gas, and ash. State volcanologists on Monday logged 389 tonnes of harmful sulfur dioxide emitted by Mayon. “Continuous moderate degassing from the summit crater produced steam-laden plumes that rose 800 m before drifting to the general west,” Phivolcs said.
Mayon has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8 as hazardous eruption and potential explosive activity can occur within weeks or even days. Authorities have so far recorded over 20,000 individuals who were forced to leave their homes amid the Mayon Volcano eruption.
