Katrina Velarde shines at SiKAT V.3: A dazzling celebration of iconic male hits

October 16 ------ In an unforgettable evening of music, Katrina Velarde once again proved her brilliance at SiKAT V.3, delivering a captivating performance filled with soulful renditions, powerful duets, and well-loved classics.  

This concert was not just a showcase of talent but a masterclass in versatility, as Katrina reinterpreted iconic songs originally performed by male artists—imbuing them with her unique voice and emotional flair. With musical direction by the esteemed Mon Faustino and concert direction by Paolo Valenciano, the night was nothing short of spectacular. The presence of seasoned backup singers Elke Saison-Ortiz and Tanya Marquez further elevated the concert, adding layers of harmony that blend perfectly with Katrina's dynamic performances. 

A grand opening: A journey through OPM gems  

The moment the lights dimmed, Katrina opened the night with a nostalgic rendition of "Ngayon" by Basil Valdez, immediately transporting the audience into a world of OPM greatness. This was followed by Hajji Alejandro’s "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika," setting the tone for a night that celebrated music in all its timeless beauty. Her voice, warm and powerful, echoed through the New Frontier Theater, reminding everyone why she’s hailed as one of the best vocalists of her generation. 

Boy band nostalgia meets SB19 tribute 

Bringing a playful twist, Katrina surprised the crowd with a boy band medley, showcasing hits like "Tearin' Up My Heart" (NSync), "As Long As You Love Me" (Backstreet Boys), and "I Lay My Love On You" (Westlife). Backed by the energetic Ace Crew Dancers, the medley had everyone in the audience singing along and reliving their favorite boy band moments. She then paid tribute to the new generation of male talents with a heartwarming rendition of SB19’s "Mapa," proving her versatility and respect for today’s artists. 

Katrina also used her platform to inspire her audience, performing Willy Garte’s "Bawal na Gamot" and a unique, upbeat version of Gary Valenciano’s "Take Me Out of the Dark." With a glowing smile, she shared her belief in gender equality, stating, "Kung ano ang mga kayang gawin ng mga lalaki ay kaya din gawin ng mga babae." It was a sentiment echoed throughout the night as she effortlessly navigated songs from male artists, adding her personal touch to each one. 

In another standout segment, Katrina invited Jessica Villarubin, The Clash grand champion, to join her for an Air Supply medley. Their harmonies soared through "The One That You Love," "I Can’t Wait Forever," and "Making Love Out of Nothing At All," driving the audience wild with applause. The pair’s chemistry was undeniable, and the audience clamored for more. Katrina and Jessica obliged with a breathtaking duet of "I Surrender" by Celine Dion, a performance that left the theater buzzing with energy. Katrina also connected with fans through a charming video wall segment, where she answered questions and shared moments from behind the scenes. It was a lighthearted break that made the audience feel closer to the artist they adore. For a fitting finale, Katrina did some of her original hits. Returning to the stage, Katrina performed some of her original songs, including "Magkaibang Mundo" and "Ako Ba O Siya?"—a poignant composition by Vehnee Saturno. She ended the concert on a high note with "Kung Naging Tayong Dalawa," a powerful original that encapsulated the night’s theme of love, longing, and what could have been. 

SiKAT V.3 was more than just a concert— it was certainly a night to remember. It was a celebration of music, artistry, and the power of reinterpretation. Katrina not only paid homage to iconic male artists but also redefined their songs through her lens, proving that great music transcends gender.
