May 22 ------ In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN Studios, Jason Dy shares some of his interesting experiences as a performer, one of which includes a checklist of his pre-show rituals. Aside from spraying perfume and looking good on stage, Jason tests his in-ear monitors and microphone before stepping onto the stage. He then finishes his routine by saying a silent prayer to God, wishing that everything goes as planned.
The “Prince of Soul” also has a habit of not eating food prior to a performance, cautious of accidentally burping in the middle of his number. Jason prefers the feeling of being able to breathe properly, especially liking how it is easier for him to sing. He later enjoys his meal after showcasing his vocal abilities for everyone to hear. Jason’s preparations commonly involved knowing the song by heart through persistent practice and warming up his voice with vocal exercises.
When asked what his most unforgettable song number was, Jason recalled his first-ever performance on the “ASAP” stage, which happened almost immediately after he emerged as the champion of the second season of “The Voice Philippines.” It was his lifelong dream to become a mainstay on “ASAP,” and it was no surprise that his knees trembled while perfecting his performance the day before.
During special productions and events, “Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin” (originally sung by OPM artist Ariel Rivera) has been Jason’s favorite song to perform, particularly since it was also his finale piece when he won “The Voice PH.” As a vocal powerhouse, one of the most challenging aspects of Jason’s performances is whenever a song includes a rap section. While he can technically rap, it takes time for him to get comfortable with the fast-paced flow and the delivery of the lyrics whenever he is asked to perform a rap song on “ASAP.”
Hilarious stories involving mistakes and bloopers during live airings never get old. For Jason, one such moment happened when a client arranged for him to sing a song he was unfamiliar with. On the day of the performance, the lyrics were not displayed on the teleprompter, forcing him to improvise on the spot and repeat the chorus multiple times.
Despite many years in the industry, Jason still finds himself wanting to jam with fellow singers Kyla, Yeng Constantino, and KZ Tandingan. However, it is “Asia’s Songbird” Regine Velasquez who he remains starstruck by. For international artists, he has expressed his desire to collaborate with H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, and Sam Smith. His fondest memory with “Everybody, Sing!” host Vice Ganda before fame was when he became an audience member of Vice’s late-night talk show, “Gandang Gabi, Vice!”, where he was also asked to showcase his singing abilities for the live audience. Jason also considers his first guest appearances on “GGV!” and “It’s Showtime!” as memorable milestones. Jason named “Whoops Kiri” as his favorite song by the Asia’s Unkabogable Superstar, proudly presenting his soulful rendition of the hit track.
