MANILA, January 29 ------ The Japanese government has finally marked the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties with the Philippines, describing this as a “golden age.”

In a statement, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines underlined significant milestones in Manila and Tokyo’s friendship, which dates back to its renewal in 1956. For Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya, some of the most important milestones include economic cooperation and stronger people-to-people ties. “I believe exciting opportunities abound this year to continuously strengthen and weave more threads into our friendship. With each new connection, we make this year a greater affirmation of our nations shared journey towards a future we envision together,” Ambassador Endo said. “Regarded as the ‘golden age’ in our ties, Japan and the Philippines have built a strong relationship in recent years, supported by the friendship between our peoples and their shared values,” he added.

Despite the changing international landscape and challenges in regional security, the envoy said Tokyo and Manila continue to be strategic partners. He also noted the country’s chairship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, where high-level meetings are expected to yield positive outcomes. Aside from this, he said the Philippines “remains indispensable” in advocating for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. “Building on our bilateral relations’ significant strides last year, we aim to deepen our cooperation, ensuring steady progress for our expanding ties in the year ahead,” Ambassador Endo said.

To mark the event, the Embassy of Japan mounted a Jazz Concert and Reception in Makati City last Jan. 20, co-hosted with the Japan Foundation, Manila and supported by JTI. First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos was also present in the event.
