Japan airs 'serious concern' over Ayungin Shoal collisions

Metro Manila, October 25 ------ Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed "serious concern" over China's actions which increase regional tensions in the South China Sea. In a statement, Japan asserted that peace and stability of the region is a legitimate concern of the international community.

It came after Chinese ships collided with Filipino vessels on a resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre on Ayungin Shoal on Sunday morning. The Department of Foreign Affairs on Monday announced that it has filed a new diplomatic protest against China following the recent collisions.

Japan added that it opposes "any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force as well as any actions that increase tensions in the South China Sea." It also reiterated that it stands with the Philippines over unlawful maritime claims, militarization, coercive activities and threat or use of force in the disputed waters. "Japan will continue to cooperate with the international community such as ASEAN member states and the United States to protect free, open, and peaceful seas," the statement said.

The United States earlier expressed support to the Philippines and condemned the Chinese vessels' "disruptive" move.
