INTERTANKO says mine clearance alone will not restore normal Hormuz traffic

September 5 ------ The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) has welcomed the clearance of sea mines from internationally recognized shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, but warned that the move alone will not be enough to restore normal commercial traffic.

U.S. Central Command confirmed that mines had been cleared from the Strait’s Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS), removing a major threat that has disrupted tanker operations for months. However, INTERTANKO said wider security risks remain and could continue to affect vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

The association said shipowners will continue to assess whether to use the Strait based on security guidance, vessel-specific risk assessments and the safety of their crews. Operators have also been advised to consider the latest information from maritime authorities before attempting a transit.

INTERTANKO said the internationally recognized TSS should ultimately be restored as the primary route for commercial shipping once security conditions stabilize.

Until then, the safety of seafarers and secure vessel movements will remain the key considerations for companies operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
