Heavy rains, floods force class suspension in 4 Mindanao provinces

COTABATO CITY, July 10 ------ Local government units in four adjoining provinces in mainland Mindanao suspended classes for both private and public schools in all levels as torrential rains brought by Typhoon “Inday” flooded major highways and communities.

The local governments of Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) ordered the suspension to ensure the safety of school children. In Maguindanao del Sur, traffic along portions of Cotabato-Isulan highway was halted since before dawn Thursday due to flashfloods that inundated the highway in Tambunan, Talayan town, said Gov. Ali Midtimbang in a statement.

The Talayan municipal disaster risk reduction and management (MDRRM) personnel rescued several civilians trapped by neck-deep floodwater after the Tambunan river overflowed due to an overnight light to moderate downpour.
