Heat index in Dagupan City and Sangley Point reach a fiery 49°C

MANILA, Philippines, May 13 ------ Heat index in Dagupan City and Sangley Point in Cavite City reached a sweltering 49°C on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said. Data from the state weather bureau showed that the searing temperature in these two areas was recorded at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, Ambulong in Tanauan City, Batangas, registered a heat index of 48°C while both Masbate City and the Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija’s heat index peaked at 45°C also on Tuesday. As for the Science Garden in Quezon City, Pagasa said it recorded a 41°C heat index around 3 p.m. The heat index is defined as a “human discomfort index that gives the ‘apparent’ temperature or what humans perceive or feel as the temperature affecting their body,” explained Pagasa. “Dangerous” levels of heat index range between 41°C and 54°C, according to Pagasa, since these degrees pose health risks like heat cramps and heat exhaustion, even possibly heatstroke, with continued physical activity.
