MANILA, Philippines, February 18 ------ The extraordinary true story that has captivated audiences worldwide is finally coming to Manila. GMG Productions and Stages have officially announced their collaboration to produce a fresh take on the multi-award-winning hit musical “Come From Away.” With a Filipino-led cast and creative team, the production marks a significant milestone in the Philippine theater scene. The show will run for a strictly limited season from June 6 to 29, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater (S-PAT).
“With ‘Come From Away,’ GMG Productions is proud to embark on this exciting new chapter, working with a Filipino-led cast and crew for the first time,” said Carlos Candal, CEO of GMG Productions. “This production is a celebration of the incredible talent in the Philippines, and we cannot wait to share this powerful story with audiences.”
Audie Gemora, founder of Stages Productions, along with partners Butch Jimenez and Jaeger Tanco, added, “We have long wanted to collaborate on a show that truly highlights Filipino talent. ‘Come From Away’ is the perfect choice. This musical demands versatility, heart, and a deep sense of ensemble storytelling, and we are thrilled to co-produce it with GMG.” Set in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, “Come From Away” tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 airline passengers unexpectedly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland. The town’s extraordinary generosity in welcoming these stranded travelers showcases the power of kindness and unity in the face of crisis.
Since its Broadway premiere in 2017, “Come From Away” has been hailed as a moving testament to humanity. The Chicago Tribune called it “a show you should see right now, for the benefit of your own spirit,” while Time Out described it as “a totally, soul-feedingly wonderful musical.” The show has won numerous prestigious awards, including a Tony Award for Best Direction, Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, and Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Book of a Musical. “This show offers more than just a night at the theater,” said Candal. “It’s an inspiring celebration of humanity and resilience, and Manila audiences will find it profoundly uplifting, especially in today’s unpredictable times.”
One of the most unique aspects of “Come From Away” is its fast-paced storytelling, with actors portraying multiple roles. The dynamic structure immerses the audience in the emotional highs and lows of the characters’ journeys, making each moment feel personal and deeply relatable. The themes of unity, hope and generosity resonate strongly, particularly in an era where global challenges continue to test the human spirit. The Manila production boasts of an all-star Filipino cast, featuring the best of Philippine theater: Cathy Azanza-Dy, Caisa Borromeo, Garrett Bolden, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante, Becca Coates, Steven Cadd, Mayen Cadd, Rycharde Everley,Topper Fabregas, Sheila Francisco, Carla Guevara Laforteza, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Gian Magdangal, George Schulze and Chino Veguillas. “‘Come From Away’ is the perfect vehicle to showcase homegrown talent,” said Gemora. “This musical requires actors to play multiple roles seamlessly, and we have assembled the best of the best. The energy surrounding this production is through the roof! This is going to be epic.”
