July 1 ------ GILAS Pilipinas Youth was dealt another beating, this time at the hands of Spain, 96-34 in the FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey. The Filipinos were simply outclassed by the Spanish, the runner-up in the last edition of the World Cup two years ago, and were outscored 30-2 in the first quarter. The lone Philippine field goal in the opening frame was courtesy of Joaqui Ludovice.
Following the 62-point defeat, Gilas Youth fell to 0-2 in Group A after also suffering a 107-48 defeat against Lithuania last Saturday. The Filipinos are now out of contention for the next phase after Lithuania picked up its second win with a 97-80 victory vs. Puerto Rico. The Philippines will close the group stage against Puerto Rico on Tuesday in a battle of winless teams.
Points were hard to come by with only Bonn Daja in double-digits for Gilas Youth with 12 points. On the other hand, four players were in double-figures for Spain with Maximo Garcia-Plata, who plays for club team Movistar Estudiantes, finishing with 15 points along with seven rebounds and nine assists. Guillermo Del Pino then added 14 points and five assists. The Spanish totally dominated all statistical departments, including a 71-22 rebounding edge over the Filipinos.
