Gilas Pilipinas, Indonesia set up semis duels

HONBURI, December 18 ------ Gilas Pilipinas will be facing Indonesia in the semifinals of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball competitions on Thursday in Bangkok.

Indonesia routed Vietnam, 89-66, in Wednesday’s quarterfinals to set up a last four battle with the Filipino cagers at 2 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Philippine time) at Nimibutr Stadium.

It will be a rematch of the semifinal battle in 2023 when Gilas won in Cambodia. Of course, Indonesia famously stunned Gilas in the pandemic-delayed 2021 Hanoi edition to win the gold for the first time.

The other side of the semis bracket pits host Thailand against Malaysia, also on Thursday.

The women’s team will also face Indonesia in the semis at 11:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m.). Indonesia blew out Singapore, 77-37, in the women’s quarters.

Thailand also plays Malaysia in the other semis.
