Flu-like illnesses declining – DOH

MANILA, Philippines, January 31 ------ Cases of influenza-like illness in the country are on the downtrend, according to the Department of Health (DOH). Latest data from the DOH showed that 4,279 cases were reported from Jan. 1 to 14, which was 15 percent lower compared to two weeks prior. Up to 6,266 cases were recorded from Dec. 17 to 31, the DOH said.

The report also showed a decline in the number of cases compared to the 7,356 recorded from Dec. 3 to 16. The DOH recorded 193,148 cases from Jan. 1 to Nov. 25 last year. Even with the decline in cases, the DOH advised the public to continue to wear face masks, ensure adequate ventilation and get vaccinated against common illnesses. “Everyone is encouraged to perform individual self-assessment and employ layers of protection as needed,” the DOH said.

Influenza-like illness is defined as a medical diagnosis of possible influenza or other illness causing symptoms, including fever, shivering, chills, dry cough, loss of appetite, body aches, nausea and sneezing, typically in connection with a sudden onset of illness. The most common detected causes of the illness in the country are influenza, COVID and common cold.
