MANILA, October 23 ------ One Filipino was killed in a drone attack targeting the Shaybah oil field in Saudi Arabia, according to reports.

Saudi Gazette, an English-language news outlet, reported Wednesday night that the attack on a Saudi Aramco facility at the oil field Wednesday morning resulted in the deaths of one Filipino and one Nepali. Two others, a Pakistani and an Indian, sustained injuries, the report added.

The Saudi energy ministry said that falling debris from the interception of the drone targeting the oil facility killed the two expatriates, a separate report by the Agence France-Presse said. "The attempted attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals, a Filipino and a Nepali, and injuries to two others," the ministry said in a statement. It did not say who launched the drone aimed at Shaybah oil field near the UAE border.

PH AUTHORITIES VERIFYING FILIPINO DEATH

Patricia Yvonne Caunan, administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), said that it had received reports about the death of a Filipino in an attack in Saudi Arabia. The agency is still awaiting a formal report from Saudi authorities regarding the incident, Caunan said, adding that the OWWA is ready to extend aid and support to the family of the Filipino. OWWA personnel together with the Department of Migrant Workers and the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh are already handling the situation in Saudi Arabia, she said.
