December 17 ------ The number of Filipinos who said their quality of life will improve in the next 12 months has dropped slightly from the previous quarter, according to the new survey findings that were released by the Social Weather Stations (SWS).
In the survey conducted from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2 with 1,500 respondents nationwide, SWS found 45 percent of adult Filipinos who said their quality of life will improve, 39 percent who said it will stay the same, and 4 percent who said it will worsen, in the next 12 months. SWS used the term “optimists” for those who believe their quality of life will improve, “pessimists” for those who think their quality of life will worsen, and “no change” for those who said it will stay the same. The latest figures translate into a net personal optimism score of +40 (percentage of optimists minus percentage of pessimists), which is classified by SWS as “excellent.”
SWS said the net personal optimism score is two points below the excellent +42 in June 2022 (46 percent optimists, 40 percent no change, 4 percent pessimists). “Out of the 146 surveys, the net personal optimism score was negative only 11 times, reaching a historic low of -19 in May 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. It has since trended back upwards but is still slightly below pre-pandemic levels,” SWS pointed out.
SWS attributed the two-point decline in the national net personal optimism score between June 2022 to October 2022 to the decreases in Balance Luzon (from +50 to +42), or Luzon outside Metro Manila, and Mindanao (from +39 to +34), combined with the increases in the Visayas (from +27 to +36) and Metro Manila (from +43 to +50).
Moreover, compared to June 2022, it noted that the net personal optimism stayed excellent among those who either graduated from college or took post-graduate studies, up by 11 points from +46 to +57. It also stayed excellent among those who either finished junior high school, had some vocational schooling, had some senior high school, finished senior high school, completed vocational school, or attended some college, although down slightly from +46 to +44. Likewise, it stayed very high among those who either finished elementary or had some high school education, although down by 6 points from +39 to +33.
SWS said it rose from high to very high among those who either had no formal education or some elementary education, up by 2 points from +28 to +30.
