Europe Braces for Week of High-Stakes Diplomacy as Ukraine Seeks More Air Defense

February 10 ------ European leaders are set to hold a packed series of high-level meetings this week as the bloc grapples with mounting security and economic challenges, including continued support for Ukraine amid Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The talks will stretch from Brussels to the Belgian countryside and on to Munich, combining emergency diplomacy, defense coordination, and debates over Europe’s long-term economic competitiveness, according to a Politico report published on Monday, Feb. 9.

Ukraine, air defense on agenda

The week will begin on Wednesday with a meeting of EU defense ministers in Brussels, where support for Ukraine will be the sole item on the agenda. Ukraine’s defense minister is expected to brief EU counterparts on Kyiv’s most urgent needs as the war enters its fourth year, including requests for additional air defense systems. European officials told Politico that Ukraine is likely to seek more Patriot and NASAMS missile systems, which have remained at the top of Kyiv’s priority list amid continued Russian missile and drone attacks.

The meeting will also address cooperation on defense innovation, including drones and other emerging military technologies, as Europe reassesses its own security posture in light of uncertainty over long-term US commitments.

Economy, competitiveness take center stage

On Thursday, attention will shift to economic issues as leaders of the EU’s 27 member states gather in the Belgian village of Rijkhoven for an informal summit focused on boosting competitiveness. Meeting behind closed doors at the historic Alden Biesen Castle, leaders are expected to discuss simplifying regulations, strengthening the single market, and reducing dependence on critical raw materials from abroad. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that the bloc must adapt to a permanently changed global economic landscape.

Security focus returns in Munich

From Friday through Sunday, European and global leaders will convene at the Munich Security Conference, where European security, defense, and the future of the transatlantic relationship are set to dominate discussions.

The gathering is expected to underscore growing concerns over whether Europe can ensure its own security without Washington’s backing, even as intelligence assessments warn of the risk of further Russian escalation. While the meetings are unlikely to deliver immediate breakthroughs, EU officials hope the week will help set a clearer strategic direction for Europe at a moment of heightened geopolitical pressure.
