MANILA, Philippines, February 9 ------ Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat continues to break barriers for himself as he was named by the NBA to its list of top 15 coaches in league history. The list, unveiled by the NBA on Tuesday (Wednesday, Manila time), put Spoelstra among some of the biggest coaching names in the NBA. Also in the list are Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Steve Kerr, Gregg Popovich, Doc Rivers and Jerry Sloan.
Spoelstra has been the head coach of the Heat since 2008 and has led the team to five NBA finals appearances and two championships. In 2017, he was named the National Basketball Coaches Association Co-Coach of the Year. Currently, Spoelstra is only second to the Spurs' Popovich as the longest tenured head coach in the NBA. The Heat are atop the Eastern Conference standings as of posting with a conference best 35-20 slate.
