EJ Obiena set for 'high flying hangout' on September 15

MANILA, September 7 ------ Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena will hold a meet-and-greet on September 15 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay, giving his fans a chance to meet the Olympian as well as other world-class athletes.

Obiena issued the invitation on his social media account, along with a QR code where those interested can register. "I am finally back home, and to show my appreciation to all of you, we will have a meet and greet event," said Obiena. The two-time Olympian said the event will showcase pole vault and feature "a number of world-class athletes in a panel discussion," as well as other fun activities and unique programs. However, Obiena also revealed that the pole vault competition that he planned to hold on September 20 at the Ayala Triangle in Makati will have to be postponed until next year.

The event had already been sanctioned by World Athletics, with Obiena intending to invite the world's top pole vaulters to compete. "I am truly sorry for this. I and the organizing team worked tirelessly to make this happen; unfortunately, we encountered a few unexpected hurdles, including my fractured vertebrae," Obiena explained. "The organizing team believes that we won’t be able to adequately deliver the competition to its full potential. I respect their view and expertise as we all want a world class event; thus, we are forced to postpone and plan again," he said.

Obiena announced last week that he will shut down his campaign for 2024 due to a fracture in his spine, which had hampered him during the Paris Olympics. The Filipino had finished fourth in the Summer Games, a big improvement from his campaign in Tokyo in 2021. "Hopefully, now that I’ve identified the source of my back problems this year, with the required 4-weeks off to heal, I’m hoping to return pain-free and ready for the 2025 indoor season," Obiena said.
