'Egay' makes landfall in Aparri, Cagayan

Metro Manila, July 26 ----- Typhoon Egay made landfall in Aparri, Cagayan early Wednesday morning, the state weather bureau reported. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the typhoon made landfall at 3:10 a.m. in the vicinity of Fuga Island, Aparri. The bureau also said a landfall in northwestern Cagayan "is not ruled out."

Egay has weakened into a typhoon Tuesday evening, but PAGASA warned that violent and life-threatening conditions are still expected in some areas in Luzon.

Signal No. 4 remains raised over the northern portion of Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of Apayao, and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte.

Signal No. 3 is hoisted over Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, the rest of Apayao, the northern portion of Kalinga, the northern portion of Abra, the rest of Ilocos Norte, and the northern portion of Ilocos Sur.

Signal No. 2 is up in Isabela, the rest of Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, the rest of Abra, the rest of Ilocos Sur, and La Union.

Areas under Signal No. 1 are Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, the northern portion of Batangas, the northern and central portion of Quezon, including Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, the northern portion of Camarines Sur, and the northern portion of Catanduanes.

PAGASA said there is a high risk of storm surge, which may cause flooding, in the low-lying and exposed coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and parts of Isabela and Ilocos Sur. The rest of Luzon and the Visayas may experience gust conditions due to Egay and the enhanced southwest monsoon. Egay was last spotted over the coastal waters of Aparri, Cagayan. It had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 215 kph.

Typhoon Egay is expected to leave the country's weather monitoring area by Thursday morning.
