DOH warns public anew vs leptospirosis outbreak

MANILA, Philippines, September 2 ------ Amid flooding in different parts of Metro Manila over the weekend, cases of leptospirosis may go up again, the Department of Health has warned. The DOH reminded the public anew to take the necessary precautions against leptospirosis, advising those who have waded through floods to immediately go to the nearest health center for a medical consultation.

People who have waded through floods, especially those with open wounds, are at risk of acquiring the potentially deadly infection, the DOH said. They may also inquire about the use of doxycycline as a prophylaxis, at leptospirosis fast lanes in government hospitals.

The DOH advised the public to wear boots when wading through floods. As of Aug. 14, the DOH had recorded almost 4,000 leptospirosis cases nationwide.
