DOH warns devotees of stampede risks during Traslacion 2026

January 9 ------ The Department of Health (DOH) issued a warning for devotees about the risk of stampede in crowded areas during traslacion or the procession of Jesus Nazareno image in Manila.

In a statement, the DOH said large gatherings especially in narrow streets and densely packed areas increase the danger of stampede incidents, which can lead to injuries or fatalities. The Department shared the common signs of an impending stampede:

- strong pushing from the crowd

- sudden and simultaneous movement of people

- difficulty lifting one’s feet

- trouble breathing

“Kapag dadalo sa Traslacion, alamin ang senyales ng stampede at ano ang dapat gawin kung sakaling nangyari ito para ligtas ang paggunita at pamamanata,” the DOH said. “Kapag napansin ang ilan sa mga palatandaang ito, agad na lumayo kung maaari at magtungo sa mas maluwag na lugar,” it added.

Traslacion will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026. As one of the activities in the Feast of Jesus Nazareno, traslacion is the procession of the image of Jesus Christ from Quirino Grandstand back to Quiapo Church. This commemorates the arrival of the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Our Lord Jesus the Nazarene) from Acapulco, Mexico to the Philippines in 1600's and the transfer from Bagumbayan (old Intramuros) to Quiapo Church - St. John Baptist Parish in 1767. Last year, the procession lasted 20 hours and 45 minutes and was attended by an estimated 8.1 million devotees, according to the Philippine National Police.
